Two zucchini in the front, two cukes in the back. This little bed is lush and leafy and green, but sadly, is producing very little at the moment. The squash has had lots of male flowers, but until this week, no female. The cukes have had TONS of female flowers, but very few male. I took a painbrush and alternated tickling male and female flowers this week, because I’m determined to get some more cukes! The one I harvested and ate earlier this week was sweet and delicious, and I want more.
Finally, a few zucchinis are appearing on each plant. I know once they get going, I’ll be up to my ears in squash, because zucchini is very prolific in our summer sun. The waiting has been torture.
One lone roma tomato is starting to blush this morning. There’s nothing better than picking these ripe from the vine, and eating them while they’re still warm.
I planted three romas, and all of them are heavy with fruit right now. I fed all the veggies last night, to keep them producing. When these start ripening, I’m thinking of getting a dehydrator. Romas make great sun-dried tomatoes!
The Early Girls started to set fruit this week. I think they’re late—in fact, I was just about to the point where I was going to pull them out. Next year, just romas. Maybe I’ll start my own seedlings, a few weeks apart, so they’ll fruit at different times.
Something is eating my basil. I moved a jar of ant bait closer this week, to see if they’ll go for it instead.
